The studio is based in Bologna and employs a team of architects and engineers from various countries, has solid experience in architectural design with particular attention to energy and environmental issues, industrial design and technological research through collaboration with universities and research programs of the European Commission.

Mario Cucinella

Mario Cucinella is the founder of Mario Cucinella Architects.

In 1987 he received an advanced degree (Laurea) in Architecture from the University of Genoa, where he was mentored by Giancarlo De Carlo. From 1987 to 1992 he worked with Renzo Piano in Genoa and in Paris.

He founded MCA in Paris in 1992 and in Bologna in 1999.

 

From 1998 to 2006 he taught at the Faculty of Architecture in Ferrara (Italy) and since 2004 he is 'Honorary Professor' at the University of Nottingham. In 2013 he was 'Guest Professor in Emerging Technologies' at the Technische Universitat in Munich while in 2014 he is 'Guest Professor' at Architectural Faculty Federico II, Naples. Cucinella holds regularly lectures in Italy and abroad. 

He is currently Director in the Scientific Committee of PLEA (Passive and Low Energy Architecture). In 2015 the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awards him to the International Fellowship for the year 2016. In 2014 he worked as a tutor with Renzo Piano to the project G124 for the recovery of the suburbs in Italy. He also founded Building Green Future, a no-profit organization that promotes sustainable development through green architecture and urban regeneration, in 2012. 

In January 2012, Mario Cucinella founded Building Green Futures a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable development through green architecture and urban regeneration. The goal is to create built environments that incorporate clean technologies and local knowledge for better living conditions and sustainable access to natural resources in developing and least developed countries. The flagship project of Building Green Futures is the Kuwait School in Gaza, developed in partnership with UNRWA. 

 

Since 2014 he has started in Bologna (Italy) S.O.S. - School of Sustainability, a school focused on training new professionals in the field of sustainability. 

In 2015 he founded in partner with Viviamolaq LAB, the Laboratorio di Architettura Partecipata which aims to create a new model for the reconstruction of school buildings.


Mario Cucinella has a solid background in architectural design and leads a team of architects and engineers from various countries and , with particular attention to energy issues and environmental impact of buildings. The firm is active in industrial design and technological research - through partnerships with universities and research programs of the European Commission - to which it devotes a special internal unit.

 

Among Cucinella’s most significant projects it is worth mentioning the Sino-Italian Ecological Building (SIEEB) in Beijing; the City Hall in Bologna (Italy); the Centre for Sustainable Energy Technologies in Ningbo (China); the new 3M Italia Headquarters in Milan and the project for the Regional Agency for the Environment ARPA in Ferrara; in Algiers, the ARTP Headquarters - Autorité de Régulation de la Poste et des Télécommunications  - and the new University Hospital Center. And in Accra, Ghana, the One Airport Square project, finished in 2015. Among the most important educational project: the Kindergarden of Guastalla (Italy), the University of Aosta (NUV); in Milan the new Surgical Pole for San Raffaele Hospital.
