Textile Craftsmen

Mariantonia Urru
Mariantonia Urru srl is a historical company and a reference for Sardinian craftsmanship. The company is named after the weaver who established it in 1981. Since then, it has grown and expanded, becoming a well-established name in the textile crafts industry. For Mariantonia Urru weaving has a lot of meanings, but it mainly represents a link between the past and the present, between innovation and tradition. It means looking at the future remaining rooted to the quality and craftsmanship of the past, preserving and at the same time innovating an invaluable technical and cultural legacy. Mariantonia Urru collaborates with international designers, supporting them in the development of unexplored technical solutions.

Flora collection

The Flora rug draws inspiration from the Regional Agency for Prevention, Environment and Energy, a building complex that meets the highest architectural and environmental standards. Mariantonia Urru created this rug using the pibiones technique, which consists in twisting thick yarn around the needles on the loom to create the raised effect of the grains that remind the shape of grapes (pibiones in Sardinian).

Ortigu Collection

@Mariantonia Urru

The Ortigu collection takes inspiration from the bark of the cork, a plant characteristic of the Mediterranean maquis that characterises the landscape of the whole of northern Sardinia and various wooded areas on the island. The name Ortigu means cork in Sardinian. The textures come from observing the natural patterns visible on these specimens, reproduced on rugs and cushions. Mariantonia Urru created this rug using the pibiones technique, which consists in twisting thick yarn around the needles on the loom to create the raised effect of the grains that remind the shape of grapes (pibiones in Sardinian).

Scivu collection

@Mariantonia Urru

The Scivu collection takes inspiration from the beach of the same name. It is located in the South of Sardinia. Here, the wind creates undulating patterns on the expanse of sand that have inspired this collection. The Scivu rugs and cushions aim to recreate this natural pattern and give the three-dimensional effect of the dunes. Mariantonia Urru created this rug using the pibiones technique, which consists in twisting thick yarn around the needles on the loom to create the raised effect of the grains that remind the shape of grapes (pibiones in Sardinian).

Is Arutas collection

©Giovanni De Sandre

The Is Arutas cushion collection is inspired by the beach of the same name. It is known as the “rice grain beach” for the shape and consistency of its grains. Mariantonia Urru created these pillows using the pibiones technique, which consists of twisting thick yarn around the needles on the loom to create the grains’ raised effect that reminds the shape of grapes (pibiones in Sardinian). The rounded shape of the pibiones conveys the idea and image of this expanse of natural jewels.
