Versatility and reconfiguration at the basis of the new school complex of Calderara di Reno
Designing the new school complex in Calderara di Reno becomes the opportunity to think about a building that is not only a set of spaces in which activities related to traditional teaching take place, but rather the place where students can feel “free to learn” in a stimulating environment, in contact with nature, where they can experience a 360-degree training course. The expressive form of the building integrates with the context, integrating and incorporating the natural environment into the building: full and empty spaces alternate in a balanced relationship.
Versatility and reconfiguration are the basis of the design of the new school complex in Calderara di Reno. Mario Cucinella Architects has designed a modular structure that will be able to be built in stages and expanded over the years.
Starting from the volume of the classroom space, new blocks are added and aggregated, generating spaces to support educational activities, giving a strong dynamism to the structure. These are spaces ready to change according to the functions that must be carried out inside. Allowing children to have a continuous contact with nature and with the external space, and then learn from nature and with nature, or even learn to take care of nature and the environment that surrounds them, was the other input that generated the project. In this case the module becomes a garden terrace, an outdoor classroom, a space for experimenting, playing and learning.
The structure is placed as a backdrop to a large urban square that will be included in the center of the pole of Calderara di Reno. Surrounded by the new school and by the house of culture, the library becomes a vital area where citizens can meet, where children can play sports, play and continue growing in the open air.
The school is spread over two floors where classrooms and workshops are distributed on both floors, while activities such as gym and canteen are located on the ground floor. In its final configuration there are two separate entrances, one for the primary school and one for the middle school. Near the entrances, located at the center of the school complex, are the agora, airy spaces for collective use.
The activities such as the gym and canteen also have dedicated access to allow the operation outside strictly school hours, ensuring a further service to the citizens in a perspective of continuous operation of the structure.
