Workshop Ricostruzione Emilia

Are five pills of beauty that wanted to respond to the needs of the population and at the same time give value to the territory. In the tragedy of these lands and those of Central Italy, hit by seismic events, we owe these communities all our effort creative. The example of the reconstruction of Emilia-Romagna – told Mario Cucinella – shows how the strength of a community has been represented with the architecture of the new schools. Not only as it was, but above all as it will be. We must imagine that from this great suffering we will re-build better, more carefully, without compromise on seismic safety and environmental safety. Quality architecture promotes important values such as beauty, design, ecology, environmental quality, innovation, sustainability and contributes to giving value to the territory by creating a new empathy with the landscape. Beauty is contagious!

On May 30, 2012, the day after the second earthquake that struck Emilia-Romagna in one of its most industrialized areas, Confindustria, CGIL, CISL and UIL joined forces to activate the Solidarity Fund "Trust Nuova Polis Onlus" in favour of the populations, workers and production systems affected by the earthquake, which was later joined by Confservizi.

The Fund includes voluntary contributions from workers and businesses throughout the country, for a total of about 7,700,000 euros.

The "Trust Nuova Polis Onlus" has donated to the population new spaces for social gathering, especially for young people, of great architectural, technological, sustainable and functional quality, built with innovative techniques and materials.

The five pills of beauty are:

• the Center for Sport and Culture in Bondeno (Ferrara)

• the House of Music in Pieve di Cento (Bologna)

• the Dance School in Reggiolo (Reggio Emilia)

• the Recreation Center in Quistello (Mantova)

• the Social and Health Center in San Felice sul Panaro (Modena)

Building to rebuild

The awarding of the design works, entrusted to the architect Mario Cucinella and his studio, represents a further confirmation of the excellence of the project that the Fund wanted to realize.

In May 2013, the Firm selected six young architects and engineers under 30 living in the areas hit by the earthquake from over 160 applications. The young professionals were the protagonists of the Workshop "Building to rebuild" at the Studio Mario Cucinella Architects, which had the objective of planning and coordinating the implementation of the interventions, in close connection with the local communities.
