The Christmas of Francis

Assisi, the setting for a contemporary nativity scene in which people become part of the story

Architect Mario Cucinella is the artistic director of the event “Il Natale di Francesco” (Francis' Christmas), which opened on December 8, 2020, and will run until January 6, 2021.

An idea born from the city of Assisi itself, an ancient place and an important symbol in the history of art which transforms into a traveling nativity scene through scattered luminous accents visible even from the valley.

A “Nativity of Light” meant to awaken in viewers an image deeply rooted in memory. The combination of storytelling and video mapping on the façades of the city from the Cathedral of San Rufino, to the Town Hall Square, to the Basilica of Saint Francis, becomes a “living journey” toward the nativity scene, where people themselves become part of the story.

Inspired by the architect’s vision, Assisi thus becomes the stage design for a nativity scene of our time. The project seeks to bring the Christmas celebration back to its origins, with special attention to those who are far away and cannot visit Assisi.

Through the website and the app ilnataledifrancesco.it, it will be possible until January 6 to admire the video projections of the Nativity of Jesus and the Annunciation of Mary, frescoes by Giotto and his workshop in the Lower Basilica of Saint Francis, as well as the exclusive video mapping of the interior of the Monumental Complex.
