A flower in San Servolo

An amphitheatre in the Venice lagoon where architecture connects people, innovation, and landscape

The design concept

The concept stems from the desire to create a space for connection and sharing, where architecture seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape. The amphitheater is not just a stage, but like the petals of a flower, it acts as a catalyst where the built structure engages in an uninterrupted dialogue with the natural environment. The structure, created using advanced 3D printing techniques and sustainable materials, represents a fusion of tradition and innovation.

The flower as inspiration

The project unfolds as a natural extension of the land, respecting the morphology of the island and integrating into the context like a living organism. The geometric freedom provided by 3D printing allows the architecture to expand outward in forms that seem to bloom from the ground, maintaining a continuous dialogue with nature.

A backdrop that amplifies the dialogue between architecture and environment

The visual backdrop of the amphitheater is represented by the Island of the Armenians. This visual element emphasizes the importance of the context in defining the relationship between architecture and the environment. The space extends beyond its stage function, offering a dynamic and fluid perception that is not confined to a single point of observation.

“A flower in San Servolo” is an amphitheatre that creates a deep bond between architecture and nature, blending harmoniously into the Venice Lagoon. Thanks to 3D-printing and the use of sustainable materials, the structure integrates into the landscape with an organic form that, like a flower, emerges from the ground. It is not just a stage space but a place for meeting and dialogue, where tradition and innovation merge in harmony with the environment."

Harmony between the built environment and nature

The intervention aims to establish a harmonious relationship between the built environment and nature, offering a layered interpretation of the elements that define the island of San Servolo. The use of advanced technologies and sustainable materials allows for a balanced dialogue between human creation and the natural context, generating architecture in which space, landscape, and human interaction are in constant contact.

From a technical point of view, the work is composed of about 750 modular blocks, divided into 62 different types. Each element was created using a 3D printing process with a certified sustainable material based on natural lime. The project was developed from a basic module designed to interlock and create a self-supporting structure.
Production took place directly on the island, thanks to a printer operating for almost 200 hours. This minimized the environmental impact related to transportation and ensured high quality of the elements. Once the material maturation process was completed, the blocks were then dry-assembled: a choice that makes the entire structure easily disassembled and reversible.
